NFPA Standards

Waukegan Firefighters are currently understaffed according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1710 : Standard for the Organization and Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations, Emergency Medical Operations, and Special Operations to the Public by Career Fire Departments.

NFPA states a minimum of 4 firefighters per engine/truck company. Waukegan has 5 stations and operates with only 28 Firefighter/Paramedics per day. NFPA 1710 states that to be appropriately staffed we need a minimum of 35 Firefighter/Paramedics. Additionally, NFPA 1710 states that we need 19 Firefighters to respond for a structure fire. Currently, Waukegan only has 12-15 Firefighters available to respond to a structure fire.
